NZ Education System

The New Zealand school system is a 13year system that provides compulsory education from the ages of 5 to 17 . Preschool is provided for free of charge to all children include foreigner.
The goal is to educate yourself to engage and think, not to inject education.

1.Preschool (Early Childhood Center / Kindergarten)

  • Most New Zealand kindergartens can be educated by children from 6 months of age to 5 years of age before entering school.

  • Kindergarten is not a compulsory education, and free education is provided with educational expenses from the age of 3 to 20 hours from the New Zealand government. (Including visitor visa)

  • Kindergarten fees usually range from about $7 to $8 an hour, and you can register by selecting your preferred time zone and day.

  • It is New Zealand's policy to care for 5 children per teacher for children under the age of 2 and 10 children per teacher for children over the age of 2, but most kindergartens have a ratio of 8 children per teacher for children over 2 years of age. a.

2. School regular course

  • The mandatory education age in New Zealand is from 6 to 16 years old.

  • The New Zealand semester is a total of 4 terms with 10 weeks of training per term. The first term starts in early February, and the vacation ends two weeks or four terms per term, and the long summer vacation begins in mid-December.

  • New Zealand schools do not have textbooks, and each grade or subject teacher prepares a variety of instructional materials for each grade and child level to fit the New Zealand education curriculum.

3. Primary School

  • When your 5th birthday approaches, you enter elementary school in grade 0 or grade 1, depending on the month of birth.

  • School hours are 8:30 am or 9 pm, and dismissal hours are 2:30 pm or 3 pm.

  • The teaching method may be conducted as individual learning depending on the learning subject or subject, or in a group discussion and presentation.

  • Most schools are attempting to combine two classes into two classes with two teachers in all or some classes.

  • Class placement consists of a freshman class and a class in each grade (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade) or a combination of 2nd graders (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th grade mixed). .​

4. Intermediate School

  • Intermediate in grades 7 and 8 in elementary education is similar to middle school in Korea. As a preparatory step to smoothly adapt to the high school environment, you will learn how to find materials, write reports and publish them, and practice responsibly following stricter rules and norms than elementary schools.

  • It is divided into general class, honor class and digital class. Honors classes are selected for students who wish through the entrance examination. In the Digital Class, students who apply for admission on a first-come, first-served basis are given an opportunity.​ As all classes are conducted on a computer, you must prepare a personal notebook or MacBook to use in class.

5. High School (College / High School)

  • New Zealand High Schools are assigned to A, B, and C classes according to the results of English, Mathematics, and Science, which are compulsory subjects through level tests at each school entrance.

  • In Year 9 and Year 10, students take the required classes based on the required subjects and arts and science subjects.

  • Beginning in Year 11, you can take the NCEA exam, and when choosing a subject, you should focus on the number of credits by selecting the subjects based on the subjects required by the desired university department.

  • For reference, the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is a New Zealand High School Certificate.

  • Upon completion of Year 12's NCEA Level 2 course, you can enter Polytechnic/Institute.

  • Year 13 is not a mandatory New Zealand curriculum, but if you are aiming to go to a university, you must complete Year 13 NCEA Level 3 credits.
